there is a down side to clean food?

i was so happy to read this article. it cleared up all confusion about vitamin B12. i will never be able to articulate what this doctor so elegantly wrote, but i am better prepared for any questions i get on my vegan diet.

vit b12 is made from bacteria and we used to get enough just by eating foods that came from the earth. now, with everything so sterile (not complaining:)) we dont get the trace amounts that we used too. i just read this article on choosing raw it was really good!   i hope he will do more Q&A about other vitamins that vegans often have questions about!

Agreed, I thought that was an interesting article too. Usually I worry if I'm not cleaning my food enough but now I usually spend less time scrubbing the vegetables - if they're organic.
I think Gena is planning on doing more of those doctor posts, so it should be interesting!

Great article!

The soil is full of wonderful little life forms that are essential to healthy plant growth and healthy us! Too bad we're too clean now to reap all of the age-old benefits of B-12 in the soil of years gone. But, I know one thing: I'd sure as h*ll rather get my B-12 via a supplement than via murdering an animal for it!

DUCK! I've missed you!

I remember reading how some people bypass the "clean food" by not washing their hands. BLECH! [No offense if someone here does it that way.] I am not a microbiologist for nothing.

That means about 1/3 of all men could be vegan.

Now I'll quit thinking about poop-hands and go read the article.

Woah! Way too many words in that link for me. Don't you have any pics of a Pig dressed as a Duck or a Duck dressed as a Pig? That's more my speed.

Ya that's what I've always understood--you can either get B12 from the manure on your lettuce leaves, or from a pill. Since I don't have a garden and a cow to crap on it for me, I use the pill. ;-)

What's funny about this discussion is that many people who aren't vegan don't know about B12 and so the question won't come up. They don't know what they're getting and from where. I know there are exceptions to that, but ... no one has ever asked me about my B12.

I've had to explain this very thing to several people, which is always fun to do. They never know how to respond since they think they just got one over on me. ha!

I just blended (because I was feeling too lazy to chew) my unwashed salad and I didn't even wash any of it. I'm such a rebel. Oh, and bonus points. I didn't die.

Hey, just stopped in to say I miss your face...err...words!

Speaking of B12, I have found that B supplements are great for anxiety.
